BW-H is sterile water containing benzyl alcohol at 0.9% (9 mg/mL) as a bacteriostatic preservative. The preservative allows repeated withdrawals from the same vial under aseptic technique, which is why it is commonly held as a general laboratory diluent.

Handling and storage

  • Store at controlled room temperature, protected from light. Do not freeze.
  • Inspect before use. Do not use if the solution is discoloured or contains particulate matter, or if the seal is compromised.
  • Swab the stopper before each withdrawal and use aseptic technique throughout.
  • Record the date of first entry and discard the vial in line with your laboratory’s procedures for opened multiple-dose containers.
  • Handle in a suitably equipped laboratory using appropriate personal protective equipment.
